לפעמים אני מקליט גרסת כיסוי כדי לסגור מעגל. לפתור לעצמי משהו פתוח, שאני סוחב איתי שנים.
השיר Beautiful people נכתב והוקלט על ידי היוצרת מלאני סאפקה ב1969.
בנעורי, היה לאחותי אליוט ולי אלבום כפול,שקיבלנו לאחד מימי ההולדת, שכותרתו היתה ״וודסטוק 2״.
שנים לא הייתי בטוח, אם זהו אלבום של פסטיבל וודסטוק נוסף, שני, ורק מאוחר יותר למדתי שזהו אלבום של השירים והמבצעים שלא מצאו להם מקום באלבום הרשמי של הפסטיבל (ופסקול הסרט). מעין אלבום ״שאריות״, מאותם שלושה ימים מיתולוגיים.
ובאלבום הזה, היו שני שירים של מלאני. היא היתה אחת מרק שלוש(!) נשים שהופיעו סולו בוודסטוק. והיא שרה שם את Beautiful people בליווי גיטרה, בקול שהיה ילדותי וקצת צרוד בעת ובעונה אחת, והילך עלי קסם.
את משמעות המילים אני לא בטוח שפענחתי עד היום. יש רגעים שנדמה לי שהיא מדברת על אנשים יפי מראה, פשוטו כמשמעו,אלילים יפיפים שנדמה כאילו הם אינם חיים באותו עולם כמו שאר בני התמותה. מאד יכולתי להזדהות כנער בודד ולא חברותי עם הפרוש הזה, שבו היא פונה בציניות אל האנשים היפים, ומתנצלת שהיא אינה חיה באותו יקום כמוהם.
אבל באותה מידה, ניתן להבין את ה״אנשים היפים״ של מלאני בדיוק ההיפך: כשיר על השקופים, הדחויים, השונים, יוצאי הדופן, שהאנשים הרגילים אינם רואים אותם, אבל בעיני מלאני הם יפים.
אני חושב שקסמו של השיר הוא שיש בו את שתי המשמעויות יחדיו. ושאפשר לבחור את המתאימה לכל רגע נתון.
Sometimes I record a cover version to close a circle. Solve something that I've been carrying with me for years.
The song “Beautiful People” was written and recorded by Melanie Safka in 1969.
When we were kids, my sister Ellyott and I had a double album, which got as a gift for one of the birthdays, entitled "Woodstock 2."
For years I was not sure if this was an album of another, second Woodstock Festival, and only later did I learn that it was an album of songs and artists that were left out of the official album of the festival (and the soundtrack). A sort of “leftovers” collection, of those three mythological days.
And in this album, there were two songs by Melanie. She was one of only three(!) Women who appeared solo at Woodstock. And she sang “Beautiful People” with a guitar, in a voice that was childish and a little hoarse at the same time, and I was enchanted.
I am not sure I have fully understood the meaning of the words until this day. There are moments when I think she speaks of beautiful-looking people, literally, beautiful idols who do not seem to live in the same world as other mortals. As a lonely boy and no social skills, I could very well identify with this interpretation, in which she cynically turns to the beautiful people, apologizing that she does not live in the same universe as them.
But equally, Melanie's "beautiful people" can be understood as just the opposite: aimed at the transparent, rejected, different, extraordinary ones whom ordinary people do not see, but to Melanie they are beautiful.
I think the charm of the song is that it has both meanings together. And that you can choose the right one for any given moment.
