בחמישה עשר בחודשו של אל המלחמה, מארס, שנת 44 לפני הספירה, באכסדרה בסמוך לבניין הסנט בעיר רומא, קראו אליהם במרמה קבוצת אצילים רומאים את יוליוס קיסר, בתואנה שעליו לקרוא ולאשר עתירה מהסנט. בעודו קורא את העתירה, שלפו את פגיונותיהם, ודקרו אותו למוות. ראשי הקשר היו קאסיוס, וברוטוס. עד היום חלוקות הדעות שמא מילותיו האחרונות של יוליוס היו "הגם אתה, ברוטוס?” או "הגם אתה ,בן?” (שמועות שסרבו למות אלפיים שנה טוענות שברוטוס היה בנו הבלתי חוקי של יוליוס). יוליוס קיסר דימם למוות מול פיסלו של יריבו-שותפו המת, פומפאוס הגדול.
יוליוס הוא הפותח את האלבום ״קיסרי רומא״.
מעניין לחשוב, איך דווקא הרצח הפוליטי הזה, בן 2056 השנים, אינו נשכח, עדיין נלמד, עדיין משמש כמשל ודוגמה ואלגוריה ונושא לוויכוחים. דווקא הרצח הזה.
אולי כי, יש כאן תרכובת של דמות סופר-ססגונית, יוליוס קיסר, שהיה נאור ואכזר, משכיל וצמא דם, מצביא מבריק ואיש שטוף זימה (שהתאווה אל נשים וגברים כאחד), ומסופר שסוסו היה מין מפלצת שהיו לו בהונות כשל אדם מעל פרסותיו.
ואולי כי עצם הרעיון, שאיש כזה ,שהצליח להשליט את עצמו בפעם הראשונה כשליט יחיד על רומא, שהיוותה את רובו של העולם הידוע (למערב), שסופרמן כזה יכול להיקטל לא בכשפים ולא בצבאות של מליונים, אלא על ידי קבוצה קטנה של עמיתיו הקרובים, חמושים בסכינים בלבד, שלח כזה גל של תדהמה ברחבי האימפריה, שהדיו לא נמוגו עד היום.
ואולי כי יש כאן איזו שלמות דרמטית מהסוג שניתן למצוא רק בסיפורי המיתולוגיה היוונית: ההיבריס ,הגאווה, הביטחון בכוחו האנושי, ההישגים העצומים (והיו לו, ענקיים, גם צבאיים אבל גם תרבותיים, מנהליים, כלכליים), המשתווים בגודלם רק לגודל העיוורון: רוצחיו היו הקרובים אליו, אלו שהסתובבו עמו "מתחת לאף".
נראה לי שכבני אדם, אנחנו פשוט אוהבים סיפורים כאלו ולא יודעים שובעה מהם: סיפורים שמאחדים בתוכם את התרכובת הבלתי אפשרית של גדולת האדם- בהישגיו הקולוסליים– ובטעויותיו והשבריריות הבלתי תאמן של גופו וגורלו. אפילו ליוליוס קיסר היו רק חמישה - שישה ליטר דם, כמו כל אחד מאיתנו.
בפרק המוזיקלי שהקדשתי ליוליוס ניסיתי לשלב את כל הניגודים הללו. יש בו גם ציטוטים מתוך אחת היצירות הקלסיות האהובות עלי ביותר: הקונצ׳רטו מספר 1 לפסנתר של יוהאנס ברהמס. יש שם מזרח ומערב, גדולה ושקט, סערה ומוות.
Julius
On the fifteenth day of the month of the god of war, Mars, the year 44 BC, just outside the Senate building in Rome, Julius Caesar was lured by a group of senator on the pretext that he had to read and approve a petition to the Senate. As he read the petition, they drew their knives and stabbed him to death. The assassins were led by Cassius and Brutus.
To this day, there is disagreement whether Julius's last words were "Et tu, Brute? (you too, Brutus)" Or "You too, son?" (Rumors that refused to die for two millennia claim Brutus was the illegitimate son of Julius). Julius Caesar bled to death in front of his dead partner-rival’s statue, Pompeus the great.
Julius is the opening track of the album “The Emperors of Rome”.
It is fascinating to think how this political assassination,more than 2000 years ago, is not forgotten, is still being studied, still serves as a metaphor and example and allegory. This assassination, of all the ones that took place before and after it in history.
Perhaps its due to the character of the super-colorful, Julius Caesar, who was enlightened and cruel, intelligent and bloodthirsty, warlord, brilliant and sexually insatiable (who lusted for men and women alike), and rode a horse that was rumored to be a monster for having toes like a human above their hooves.
And perhaps that very idea, that such a nan,who managed to impose himself as a single authority to Rome, an empire which included most of the known world of the time -- can be killed, but not by magic and not by armies of millions, but by a small group of close colleagues, armed only with knives, sent a wave of shock that the empire, that still echoes to this day.
And perhaps that there is such drama here, of the kind that can be found only in the stories of Greek mythology: hubris, pride, tremendous achievements (and he had many, including military ones but also cultural, administrative, economic), comparable in size only to the scope of his blindness: the killers were the ones closest to him, those who were "under his nose".
I think that as human beings, we just love these stories: stories that combine the greatness of man: his accomplishments and his pride, and on the other hand, the incredible fragility of his body and his fate. Even Julius Caesar had only five or six pints of blood,Just like the rest of us.
In the track I dedicated to Julius, I tried to combine all these contradictions. It also has quotes from one of my favorite classical works best: Piano Concerto No. 1 by Johannes Brahms. The track, to me, contains both east and west, grandeur and humility, storm and death.
